The Equine Cushing's Disease and Insulin Resistance website is complimentary to the Equine Cushing's and Insulin Resistance Yahoo Group (EC and IR Group)

The year 2009 marks the 10th anniversary of the EC and IR Group which was started in 1999 for dissemination of information and sharing of experiences among owners and professionals dealing with Equine Cushing's Disease.

Robin Siskel founded the EC and IR Group for her mare, Tina (photo above) with the goal of keeping information firmly based in science. Noted veterinarian Eleanor Kellon, VMD, joined the EC and IR Group in 2001 and became Co-Owner with Robin.

Because Insulin Resistance was and still is often mistaken for Cushing's Disease, the EC and IR Group developed into a resource for both Cushing's Disease and Insulin Resistance.  With over 8,000 members, the EC and IR Group, arguably the world's largest membership based equine internet group, provides the latest research, medication information & dietary recommendations for horses with these conditions.

Thanks to so many dedicated members, the EC and IR Group has become the largest field trial database for Cushing's Disease and Insulin Resistant horses in the world.  This website is a tribute to the thousands of members and horses that have journeyed through the trials and tribulations of Equine Cushing's Disease and Insulin Resistance. Each horse and each member has contributed to the learning and the success of this group and to the health and longevity of many more horses.

Equine Cushing’s Disease, also known as Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID), and Insulin Resistance (IR) are distinctly separate conditions. The often overlapping signs and symptoms can make diagnosis difficult. This website is intended to provide detailed information for the protocol developed on the EC and IR Group termed DDT/E - Diagnosis, Diet, Trim and Exercise.

Insulin Resistance

BeaucrestJune2002Insulin Resistance (IR) is a condition where cells do not respond to insulin, the hormone primarily responsible for transporting glucose into the cells. It's sometimes referred to as “Equine Metabolic Syndrome”  “Pre-Cushings” or “Cushingoid” which further complicates obtaining a correct diagnosis.

The pituitary gland secretes high levels of the hormone ACTH which stimulates the production of cortisol, a stress hormone. This is generally considered a disease of middle-aged or geriatric equines.
